This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students walk into our classroom every day ready to learn, and determined to succeed. However, many of them are unable to bring in their own supplies, so it is up to me to make sure that they have what they need to learn. As their teacher, I want to be able to provide them with all the tools they need to succeed.
I am a second grade teacher in a Title I funded public school on Staten Island.
I teach a 12:1:1 class with 12 students that have challenges ranging from learning disabilities to speech and language impairments and autism. They struggle to keep up with the Common Core Curriculum and need a lot of support. As their teacher, it is my job to do everything possible to make the curriculum accessible to them.
My Project
We spend a lot of our day working in small groups. I need to be able to help many of my students at once, which isn’t easy and can be very awkward with my current square table that only seats a few kids at a time. Kidney tables make small group learning so much easier, and enable all students to feel included and part of the group. At the same time, it also gives all students their own space. This table would make learning in my classroom, more flexible, more inclusive, and more fun which is so important for all of my students.
