I challenge you to find students as dedicated as the ones at my high school. They come early, stay late, and some even work through lunch. In addition to coming early, some stay until 4:00 or later to take advantage of the quiet work space that the school offers. After that, they go on to sports practices, games, internships, and after-school jobs.
My students are brilliant, creative, funny, and thoughtful.
We work hard, but we also have a lot of fun. There is never a dull moment in my classroom, thanks to my students' "outside-of-the box" thinking.
My Project
According to historians, standing desks were an oddity used by eccentrics like Hemingway and Dickens. Research has shown that these authors had it right. There are many benefits to standing while working.
Imagine sitting in a chair that is attached to a desk for hours each day, with only a few minutes every hour or so to walk and stretch.
It's easy to imagine the discomfort this causes some people, especially growing teens. My students have realized the impact standing desks have on their energy levels and ability to focus in class. I use a standing desk and have two standing desks already in my classroom. Yesterday, one of my juniors, Lucas, asked me if I could get more standing desks. He, and other students, would like the opportunity to use a standing desk more often. As you can imagine, it's difficult to share two desks with a class full of students.
Studies show that standing while working increases a person's concentration and focus. People who regularly use standing desks report an improved attention span. While using a standing desk, students will be able to better focus during instruction and pat attention to the day's lesson.
By providing a standing desk for my classroom, you will show my students that a healthy lifestyle is important, and you will encourage them to be more active during the school day. You will also provide them with the opportunity to improve their focus and attention during instruction. And if standing desks were good enough for Hemingway and Dickens, they are good enough for my students.
