This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are second graders from a high poverty school. Many of them don't have the opportunity to grow their own food, or know what types of food choices to make. They think that a good snack is a bag of chips. I want to help them change that. I want my students to learn about how we grow food, how we can compost to help our food to grow, and how to make smart food choices. With the help of our cafeteria manager the student will be able to prepare the foods we have grown and eat them.

My Project

Last year our 2nd graders were able to start a small garden with the help of DonorsChoose, PTA and Arrowhead Honda. This year they would like to grow healthy food instead of flowers.

This kid inspired project will allow us to grow a variety of garden vegetables, perennial and annual fruits, herbs, and pest controlling plants.

The vertical gardens will allow us to make the best use of the space near our current garden. The composter will allow us to take leftovers from our lunch and create nutrient rich compost to use in the garden and help our produce grow. The books will help us to become more educated about how food grows, and how to make healthy snacks.
