Kid Entomologists: A Science and Social Skills Adventure
Help me give my students live insects to study for the end of the school year project coupled with social-competence books to build cooperative learning.
Albert Einstein quotes, "The mind that opens to a new idea never returns to its original size." Therefore, my goal is to provide my diverse learners with meaningful projects and instructional resources to address the disabilities that impede their learning such as attention-deficit, dyslexia, social-emotional, and autism. Their past experiences of failure in school have outweighed their successes as they also deal with socioeconomic ills within their communities, making the burden to learn more difficult.
Nevertheless, in spite of their circumstances, my students are inquisitive, creative, hopeful and eager to come to school- their safe haven; therefore, they know that their teacher holds their minds dear to her heart and will continue to discover innovative ways to challenge them to think and learn!
Aligning each student to the appropriate instructional resources, my students can grasp concepts through a combination of visual stimuli and usage of hands-on materials as well as respond to intervention through interactive, arts-infused, project-based, hands-on learning activities. With time and investment in exploring how they learn, my students will leave my classroom with a newfound growth mindset!
My Project
Last year, a similar project involving the study of insects was successful. My students, who are wild about science, were fascinated with comparing/contrasting insects and learning about their life cycles. My students asked me to repeat this project as they are very inquisitive and want to know more!
Thus, this project has been enhanced with a social skill component which entails students learning about how insects live and work in the same space through collaboration and building community.
Given that my students are predominately visual (sight) and kinesthetic-tactile (movement; hands-on) learners, each resource was selected based on their interest coupled with how they learn best. The Insect Lore Butterfly Garden with Live Cup of Caterpillars, Insect Lore Deluxe Ladybug and the Ant Farm Castle, Habitat Educational & Learning Science Kit Toy for Kids & Adults - Allows Study of The Behavior of Ants and Social Structure, Ecosystem will give my students the opportunity of taking on roles as Kid Entomologists.
My students will compare and contrast the insects' social structure with their own social structures as humans. Social competence books will teach students about getting along with self and others. Scientific books about each insect will enhance students' knowledge of the life cycle as well as bring to light how interaction within the insects' colony and/or community is necessary for survival. Thank you for your generosity!
