My students need a subscription to My Big World to explore science and have something to take home to extend learning with parents.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My first question of the day is "Are You Ready to Learn?" . I would love to provide my students with more science opportunities that we can do in class but that I can also send home with the parents to extend the learning. These magazines would be a valuable tool for learning with parents.
I have 20 pre-k students in my classroom.
We are based in an elementary school. Although we are solely based on income and considered a high poverty school we still manage to maintain an "Achieving school" status. I believe this is because of the relationships we establish with the parents and encouragement we give them to participate in their child's learning. Because of the poverty my students are not afforded the opportunity to have reading materials at home. I would like this subscription to work with them at school but then to send it home and have an extending learning activity they can do with their parents as well. This will be a great way to let parents get involved with asking for their financial help. The number one question I get from parents is "How Can I help?" This will open up that possibility for the parents by having the materials provided while I provide activities to do at home. I really hope we can make this a success!
My Project
My plan for this subscription is to work with students in small groups. We will read the magazine together. I will create a couple activities based on literacy and science to go with the magazine. After that I will send a letter home for the parents with extending activities that they can do with their children at home. I would like to end the subscription with the students and parents working on a mini project to display for the rest of the class. For example, if the topic is insects they may choose an insect to create a poster of facts on and then they'd share it with the class. We are trying to implement a project approach into our program and this would be a great start!
For my classroom I get a very small budget for the year.
I have to supply all of our school supplies such as crayons, glue, scissors, paper etc for the class. This leaves very little funds for extras like reading materials and resources for parents to help them extend learning with their children. This will help my students build a solid relationship with school and parents regarding learning. It will set a precedent for grades to come and encourage their parents to dive in and help them!
