My Students
As the school nurse, I service students in a K-3 neighborhood elementary school with a high level of poverty. Often the school environment is the student's first experience with health promotion activities, such as hygiene, life skills, and street and playground safety. The Nurse's Office is where they are connected with in-school services such as dental visits, vision services, and basic health care. I see a lot of sick children whose illness could be prevented with a little education and much needed basic supplies.
My Project
Ask any health care professional and they'll tell you that the best way to prevent getting sick is good hand hygiene. There's no place that this is more important than in an elementary school. Every year as the school nurse, I see hundreds of little children knocked down with common colds, nausea, vomiting, and the dreaded diarrhea. Once an illness hits a classroom, it often becomes epidemic, frequently taking down a good fraction of the classroom and sometimes the teacher and other staff as well. School absences result in the disruption of instruction and can often tax families that have limited resources for child care during their child's illness.
My project seeks to mitigate the problem by engaging in an all-out hand washing campaign.
Not only have I planned a comprehensive education program to teach appropriate hand washing but I plan to arm teachers with the necessary supplies to help combat the problem. Each classroom will get their own foaming pump bottle of anti-microbial soap, instructional hand washing poster to reinforce the skills I will teach, and a tub of Clorox wipes to clean the places where germs lurk in classrooms (desk, keyboards, door knobs). Please help kick the cooties out of our school's classroom and give our student's a greater chance of a happy healthy education. Our minds and bodies will thank you!
