Kick Off the New Year

Help me give my students a great start to the new school year. I am a high school special education science teacher in an urban public high school in Philadelphia. We need to stock our classroom!

My Students

My students are all in high school and enrolled in special education classes. They come from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds and attend a comprehensive neighborhood urban high school. All of the students in my school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and we are a Title I school.

Many of my students are the first in their families to be on track to graduate high school and are role models to their younger siblings, neighbors and other family members.

My students come to school eager to learn so they can go out into the world and do well for themselves and their families.

School funding in Philadelphia leaves little room for supplies and materials to do hands-on science. My students learn by doing and are excited to actually do science.

My Project

My students need pencils, pen, markers, crayons, paper and notebooks to start the new year right. Many of my students live well below the poverty line and families struggle to provide their kids with the necessary supplies for school. We also need a locker in the classroom as the room is shared with many teachers throughout the school day and we need to be able to lock up our supplies to ensure they are there when my students need them. A cricut machine will allow us to decorate our bulletin boards and hallways with welcoming messages throughout the school year to motivate and encourage our students to do well.

Please help my students start the new year right with adequate supplies for learning and engagement.

Kids will stress less and learn more when they have what they need to be successful and at the high school level, many students are embarrassed to ask for help or share their family situation. Having supplies on hand will make this less stressful for my students as they kick of their first year of high school.
