Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students represent a unique and diverse group of second-graders in an urban midwestern city. Their diversity is seen in many different ways, from cultural to economic to family. Several families have lived in the neighborhood for many years and have sent two or more generations of students to my school.
The children are energetic, excited to learn and make new friends as they navigate social situations and their emotions.
They come with a multitude of learning styles and learning challenges. One-third of my classroom consists of English language learners bringing several different languages from home which present unique opportunities and struggles.
Like most students, they enjoy interactive activities and projects, love listening to and sharing their own stories, and do best with modeling and hands-on activities as they learn to navigate friendships and their academic world.
My Project
We will kick-off our school year together as old friends and new. To help create our caring community, we will focus on being kind, thoughtful friends, and to appreciate the diversity each person brings to second grade.
Empathy and compassion are the essential basis for a positive, successful school year!
These books will allow us to have important conversations on recognizing our emotions, showing kindness, embracing our differences and accepting everyone's unique qualities.
We will utilize these materials to model and role-play specific social situations while recognizing our peers' perspectives and to help the students be assertive in meeting their needs throughout the school year.
