Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Youngsters are motivated by a challenge and need to learn to persevere to reach their goals! By using an active and exciting game from Japan, called Kendama, my under-served students will develop a wide range of physical, social, mental, and concentration skills to apply in all aspects of life.

Students in my urban district are denied the chance to get active and challenge themselves!

The school day consists of test-centered drills and rote learning for many children in the guise of academic intervention. But my kids have interests and creativity that needs to be harnessed to make their school experience enjoyable and turn them on to learning! The kids are energetic and curious, but often stifled in classrooms that don't engage them holistically and which discourage activity and physicality. My students are grades 6-8 in a high-poverty urban public school. They are all Latino and many are English learners. The kids are eager to try new things and learn about the world outside their 'hood'. The students are in need of physically and mentally challenging activities that are high-interest and engaging.

My Project

Do you remember when you first learned a new skill? Riding a bike, throwing a curve ball, popping an ollie, doing a french braid, whatever? Do you remember how that felt? KENDAMA is a game that allows students to feel that sense of accomplishment and self-confidence regularly. The game requires students to develop concentration, hand-eye coordination, and most of all stick-to-it-iveness/perseverance. Students will learn not to give up and to keep trying to do what they set their mind to. They will also become part of a community of youngsters living an active and positive lifestyle. They will be gaining cultural capital as well. Kendama has been spreading as a popular game around the globe. The Kendama teaches you that you can accomplish what you set your mind to...a skill that will serve students well throughout their lives.

This project will give kids a chance to play, but learn at the same time.

They will build concentration and focus that will result in increased academic achievement. They will have fun and build positive social bonds through a cultural experience and pastime. Kendama will be a gateway for students in my low-income community to explore other cultures and grow as self-confident individuals and members of an active community. This project has potential that is wholly positive and far reaching.
