Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My class is a full spectrum of learners. There are students who speak English as a first language, whose parents are college educated and have a career. Unfortunately, that is not the norm. Our school is a Title 1 school and over 90% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. I have students that read on a 1st grade level trying to comprehend a math word problem at a 4th grade level. Many of my students are new to the United States. I have many students whose first language is not English, who come from broken homes, whose parents work 2 or 3 jobs and are not home at night to help with homework. Because of these limitations, many of my students lack the necessary technology to keep up with the way the world is going.
Even with these challenges, my classroom is always a flurry of activity.
We are constantly learning and doing everything we can to help these kids get as far as they can. The students know what I expect of them from day one, and that is they must always try and they must always know how important their education is.
My Project
As the world changes, more emphasis is given on technology and being able to use that technology to take tests, type essays, take notes, make movies, even check your grades, and it is evolving everyday. Teachers spend a lot of their own money to bring in new technology and give the students a chance to use it and learn from it.
Imagine the faces of the students when they get to use a brand new iPad Pro to make a movie of their classmates doing a lab.
They will take pictures of their friends for the yearbook. They will film themselves making paper slides about Florida's History or making a cloud in Science. They will draw 3-D models of shapes and find perimeter, area and volume. Not only will they learn the task at hand but it will open a whole new world of technology for many of them that don't ever get to use it.
