My students need issues of Scholastic News to practice analyzing informational text.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Tipton's classroom raised $232

My Students
"We are smart, we are capable, and we will ace this!" is a mantra my students repeat often. Many of my students walk into my classrooms classified by the school district with up to 8 "at-risk" factors. These risk factors include still learning English, coming from an economically disadvantaged household, already failing a state standardized test, and more. Despite the many risk factors in my room, my students show me day after day they are ready to rise above any and all expectations.
My school works hard to create a community where students and teachers love to be, and students love to learn.
Because many of my students are economically disadvantaged, many have not been outside of Houston city limits. In order to help build more background knowledge in my students, I am always looking for ways to bring the outside world into our small classroom.
My Project
At times it can be difficult to find articles about current events that students find engaging or even written at a level that fourth graders can understand. Scholastic News creates 24 newspapers that are eye-catching, engaging, and well-written. These newspapers explore current events, cultures in other countries, and general knowledge pieces. We will read these articles together and students will be able to analyze the different points of view that are represented in each newspaper.
Scholastic News is a fantastic resource that can open my student's eyes to the world outside of the classroom.
By donating to my project, you are helping to build a classroom of analytical thinkers with an interest in the current events of the world around them.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
