Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have come into high school behind grade level but these students are not quitters. We have a strong culture of achievement and encourage all students to prepare for and apply to college.
Were you to walk down the halls of my school, you might think you are in the United Nations.
We have students from five continents (and more than that from a number of islands) representing a diverse array of languages and cultures. My students are a mix of new immigrants and native-born Americans. All of them want to succeed.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of measuring and "making" tools for use in my math and engineering classes. One of the key practices for competent mathematicians is an ability to "attend to precision." (CCSS MP 6) Yet in each school I've ever taught in during my career, if we are provided any measuring tools at all, they are made of cheap soft woods or thin plastics, and quickly lose their straight edge and thus their usefulness.
The tools I am requesting are made of steel and aluminum.
They will be able to guide a straight line and a crisp angle. They should be able to maintain their straightness for many years. The clamps I am requesting will be able to hold components in place while glue cures. Between these two types of tools, my students will be better able to bring their ideas and designs into a real, physical form.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
