Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my district are consistently eager to learn and enthusiastic about new and exciting learning opportunities, despite the challenges that they face outside of the classroom.

Our students live in an urban, low-income city comprised largely of hardworking immigrant families, many of whom speak a language other than English at home.

Our students and their families have been severely impacted by the pandemic; the impact extends beyond academics to social-emotional health, and general well-being.

Our students love to learn, but as we have begun this school year in a fully remote model, we need to do everything we can to set them up for success. We are working to take the lessons learned during the spring's remote teaching and apply them as we transform teaching and learning moving forward. We will do whatever is possible to keep the spark of learning alive--along with the enthusiasm, effort, and resiliency that defines our students.

My Project

With students learning remotely, we need to do everything possible to set our students up for success. My students need more STEM experiences and opportunities to develop 21st-century skills, such as coding, that they will need in order to be successful in their future careers. They also need opportunities to learn about women and people from a diverse background--like themselves--who are successful in STEM careers.

In my virtual STEM Challenge class, students will use the books about electronics to learn about circuitry (I will read aloud or lend books to students during remote learning); then they will use the requested materials to explore circuitry as they create projects that combine paper crafting and simple circuits.

I will make paper circuit kits for home for the students who participate in my STEM Challenge virtual class. The paper circuit materials will provide an exciting new opportunity for students to experiment with combining different materials, apply skills such as creating a circuit, and collaborate to engage in the engineering design process--as they bring their paper circuit designs to life!

Although I wasn't planning on this project being done remotely, I am excited about giving students the opportunity to use the paper circuit materials at home so that they can still collaborate and develop critical thinking skills as we work together, remotely for now.
