My Students

Hello, I am a 7th grade Health/Science teacher at a middle school in an urban city. There are approximately 2,400 students at my school and I see about 135 students daily. The school I teach has a very diverse population of students in many ways. My school has students of a wide variety of cultural backgrounds. I teach students who speak English, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, Russian, Armenian, and Swedish.

My students are facing a time in their lives where they are going through so many changes, both physically, emotionally, and also in what is expected of them as individuals and responsible scholars.

I feel people have the preconceived notion that middle school kids must be crazy, and I must be even crazier for wanting to deal with these walking hormones with cell phones. This is not the case, though -- my students are good people who are interested in learning and show that they can be responsible and treat others with kindness. I have spent most of my career teaching elementary school, but I am so glad that I decided to "culminate" to middle school and have had the privilege of working with these students.

My Project

I would love to have thee instructional materials for my classroom because I take my role as a middle school health teacher very seriously and I want to ensure that my students are fully aware of the consequences of choices that they may face in the near future. I want my students to see firsthand the effects of using alcohol as they wear the goggles experience a safe way to learn the important lesson that alcohol greatly impairs a person’s balance, vision, reaction time and judgment. Another consequence that I do not want my students to experience is finding out they have an STI or an unplanned pregnancy. The model for the condom demonstration would be used by me to show students the proper method for using this contraceptive.

The number one goal I have is to make my students aware of the possible consequences they face for actions they may take in their teenage years so they can make good choices for themselves and their future.
