My students need iron filings, 5 bell-jar vacuum kits, 10 boxes of nitrile gloves, filter paper, and 8 preserved rats for dissection to use in various lab activities.
I work tirelessly to stay supplied with many different materials for science activities for my students. I hope to make science one of their favorite subjects and when they get to experience doing science with real stuff, they never forget it!
I teach general science to about 100 seventh grade students at a small school in Arkansas.
Many of them are from the farming country near our school. We have not had the luxury of having a real laboratory to use in the past, which has made it challenging to provide some of the hands-on activities that are so critical in science. Even so, I do all I can to give them these experiences.
My Project
The iron filings I'm requesting will be used in a fun activity where students are required to devise a way to separate a mixture, including sawdust, iron filings, sand, and salt. The bell jar vacuum kits will be used in our investigation of air pressure. The gloves will be used to dissect the rats requested and in several other lab situations where this safety precaution is required. The filter papers will be used in a CSI investigation where we will be using chromatography to separate the pigments in ink to solve a "crime."
It's so important for students to be able to experience science in a way that is relative to their lives.
The activities like these are some of the few things I remember about my own school experience when I was young. I know that these activities will be very memorable for them and will greatly increase their knowledge about and appreciation for our world.
