This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What was your favorite part of middle school science? Experiments? Mixing chemicals? Dissecting a frog? Any experiment as long as you got to play with something? Many of my students would love to do these things but we cannot experiment if we do not do it safely!

My students are incredibly curious young teens who go to school in an urban setting.

The school has approximately 425 students in grades 6-8 and we share our building with two other schools. Most of my students live very close to our school and have attended the other neighborhood schools for most of their lives. The neighborhood is quite impoverished and most of my students receive free or reduced lunch. Working with my students, I have seen their incredible interest in science and how the world works and I am always amazed by their questions and comments.

My Project

I am requesting basic safety supplies that will allow me to do so much more with my students so that science can come alive. Many of my students have asked to do activities that require more safety equipment than we have. Both safety goggles and gloves will allow my students to actually do more hands on activities and experiments rather than watch me or someone on a video perform them. Unfortunately, many every day products including things like vinegar and rubbing alcohol can irritate the eyes and hands if accidentally splashed or spilled. Activities from working with rocks and minerals to determining the reproduction rates of bacteria require my students to take proper safety precautions. Having this equipment will allow them to be true scientists investigating the world.

In a world where science and technology are developing more quickly then ever it is important that we share these developments with those who will be making the discoveries of tomorrow.

A simple set of equipment will significantly change the quality of science instruction and experiences that my students will have in my classroom, and who knows? Perhaps we will be starting them on a path that will lead to significant scientific advances in the future!
