As the School Counselor, one of my main responsibilities is to address the needs of the "whole child" and treat every student holistically. My students come with varying needs, and over 90% belong to impoverished homes. Their diverse cultures, needs, and experiences mean that one size does not fit all when it comes to guidance and counseling.
At my school, I wear many hats and I facilitate a vast diversity of students' and teachers' needs alike.
Currently, the capacity of my school budget has been limited and funds are usually used out of pocket. As the school counselor, I take a very active role in my students' lives. I visit classrooms daily and give presentations that build character and educate the students about hygiene, core values, and social behavior. Being heavily involved means sacrifices to ensure our mission is being met each year and that is providing an equal opportunity to each student who walks in our educational organization.
My Project
Our school is embarking on a range of school-wide science and math projects, including teaching our students how to cook, using math and science concepts.
I serve students with a wide range of needs from gifted, to autistic, to ESOL and ESE with various literacy levels.
The books I am requesting will allow these students to own a book of their choice that would keep them actively engaged while improving their literacy skills at their levels. It also assists in keeping them healthy as they will not be sharing the books.
The math and science cookbooks I am requesting, help to demonstrate many basic tasks that everyone has to do daily, such as learning about cooking, eating healthily, kitchen safety, and cleaning. My students will also learn hands-on about force and motion, the property of magnets, how temperature affects matter, and they will learn how to measure solids and liquids, which fulfills STEAM components.
These coloring books with learning games and poke-a-dot books have activities that will teach facts and skills that will help these students be independent, and actively learning and exploring recipes from around the world. They will own these books as sharing of supplies and materials is currently discouraged due to CDC guidelines.
