Keeping Our Fitness and Nutrition on Target

My students need healthy snacks to give them energy and sports equipment and storage cart to get them moving.

My Students

This year I will be teaching a class of 17 creative and talented first-grade scholars at a Title I school in urban North Carolina. We are a Title I school meaning more than 85% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. Even though these students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds they still come to school happy, smiling, bubbly, and ready to learn! In class, my students are not just kids, they are achievers, scientists, leaders, goal-setters, dreamers, readers, and mathematicians. My students aspire to be policemen, doctors, teachers, firefighters, veterinarians and inventors. They deserve the best education and the best educational supplies to help them be successful first graders so they can make their dreams come true!

My Project

My first graders have a full, and long, day of learning. We have the earliest lunch time, 10:30, so around 1:00 my students start saying they are hungry. We discussed the importance of having a healthy snack. My class used the Quill website to decide they wanted cheese crackers and animal crackers as their daily healthy snack. My students told me that they want to have healthy snacks so they can be healthy and have energy throughout the whole school day. My students also requested sports equipment because they said exercising will also keep them healthy. As a class they decided to request a football, jump ropes, basketball and a cart to store all their equipment.

Having this recess equipment will allow ALL of my students to reach 60 minutes of physical activity a day.

My students are so excited to get healthy and fit! In fact, they even asked how we can be active inside the classroom. They decided the moveable number line would be a great tool to get them out of their seats and moving rather than using a paper number line at their desk.
