Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Ask and of my students and they will tell you: their "book pick" day is their favorite day of the week. Getting an endless amount of time to browse my library and choose the books that interest them, filling their book boxes, and taking those boxes back to a spot in the room to read gives them joy.
I teach 23 high-energy, loving, and eager readers.
These kids come to school every single day ready to learn and excited to dig into our classroom libraries. These kids are not aware of what they miss out on due to lack of funding.
Our school serves students in Head Start and grades K-8. Since opening our doors in August of 1995, we continually strive to be one of the premier schools in our district. Our students, parents, faculty, and administration are second to none. Our school climate is focused on ensuring that all students achieve success.
In our community, 87% of the students are minority and 37% of the students are English language learners. Nearly 95% of the children attending our school qualify for federally subsidized free or reduced-price food services, a nationally recognized poverty indicator. Our most important goal is to increase student achievement and that happens by providing reading materials that the students are able to engage with.
My Project
In the past I have used both Ziploc gallon-sized baggies and Banker's Box magazine files to store my students' books. As you can imagine, the "disposable" materials did not last long in the hands of 8-year-olds for an entire school year, through no fault of their own! These make-shift book boxes are simply not strong enough to hold up through the standard wear-and-tear.
My students need personal book boxes. The plastic, durable, and heavy-duty book boxes from Lakeshore will not only last through this upcoming school year, but will continue to reach the hands of students for years to come. Students will not have to make do with less books or store the books in their desk - a hazard in itself with how kids shove things into there!
This project will improve my classroom by lessening to wear and tear on my classroom library books and provide an easy and dependable way for students to store and transport their books.
Your donation to my project will change my students' lives for the better. Thank you for your consideration!
