This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Martin Luther King, Jr said, "Music is a discipline, and a mistress of order and good manners, she makes the people milder and gentler, more moral and more reasonable." As an educator, I know that music helps my students' learning abilities. They can't help but join and dance to the beat.

My students are smart, driven, and very verbal.

They are 95% Hispanic and 5% African American. Most of them do not have a computer or other technology at home. Our school provides a safe environment away from gangs and other socioeconomic limitations. They are exposed to violence and socioeconomic limitations, like lack of food, that others take for granted. In my classroom, they get to dream because the sky is the limit. They've planned future traveling plans, designed their dream homes, and have become celebrated community heroes. The classroom is a safe haven where dreaming high is encouraged. Nothing is impossible when they dream, write, and share their future plans. My students thrive as enthusiastic learners because they are provided with the right education and memories that will last a lifetime. As an educator that's my life-long goal, to continue providing an environment conducive to learning.

My Project

Studies have shown the benefits of playing an instrument, especially for children. Kids that play an instrument are more likely to be better at math, science and other subjects. This year marks our 25 year that mariachi has been offered at my school. Many students want to be part of the mariachi but due to the limited number of instruments available only a certain number of kids are able to join. Every year, the program has steadily gained popularity among the students. The challenge is acquiring enough instruments to keep up with the growing demand. This program has given students a creative outlet and an avenue for continued growth and learning. My students need help keeping the few violins our school provides safe. Thus, the reason for the request of a protective case and a bow to play a violin. Studies have shown the benefits of playing an instrument, especially for children. This Mariachi instrument case and bow will benefits my students by keeping a violin safe and being able to play it.

My school is located in a low income neighborhood, where having to purchase an instrument can keep a student from doing music.

I love teaching at my school because I have very dedicated students who love to make music and keep learning. This Mariachi instrument will benefit my students in many wonderful ways. I need your generosity to fund this wonderful project and keep our 23 year Mariachi tradition alive.
