My Students
My students represent the best of the best we could hope for for our future. They are bright, creative, confident and compassionate. They come from families rich in culture and strong in values, creating an environment of love both in my school building and in their local community. Every day at school is a day where we all come together to grow and develop as better humans together.
As their teacher, I foster their strengths, support their needs, and prepare them for global citizenship.
I can identify their talents and abilities, but it is dramatically more powerful when they come to see their own strength on their own. In an effort to support this self-exploration and independence, I aim to create a learning environment that fosters strategic thinking and problem solving skills.
My Project
Every Friday during math, my students count the contents of baggies to help develop their one-to-one correspondence, skip counting, and grouping strategies. These counting collections are made up of anything- math manipulatives, fun erasers from the dollar store, paperclips, seashells... anything that I've found that students can count, categorize, and group! It's a critical skill for our young mathematicians to develop this number sense and see quantities in real life, not just abstract ideas. But kindergartners can be rough on plastic bags filled with goodies, which is why I am asking for strong plastic bins in which we can keep our collections! This will ensure the longevity of our materials and keep our math time organized!
