My students are 6th graders at an urban magnet school in Connecticut with an environmental theme. Not only do we focus on math and reading in my classroom, but we focus on becoming environmental stewards and doing what we can to protect our resources. Our school is a sanctuary city and we are regularly welcoming new learners into our class.
These scholars are struggling to rise above a variety of obstacles over which they have no control.
Our school is 100% free lunch and many students come from homes with no basic technology and limited books. They do not have the extra income for personal care, cleaning, organizational, and recreational items that most of us think of as necessities.
My Project
Math class alone can be very difficult, throw in organization and some students can get overwhelmed. Many of my students are very low in mastering different math concepts and being 6th graders they also have difficulty in keeping their materials organized. I believe that if students organize their materials and they are taught how to use an organized binder to study and take notes, then they will begin to master the necessary math concepts needed for 6th grade.
Our schools math program has many different aspects to it, by having binders, my students will be able to keep their notes, reference pages, tests and projects divided and organized.
I hope these binders help my students learn how to be organized so they can be successful this year and in the future.
