I am very excited to be in a new school and have a great new bunch of boys and girls this year. I teach in a small school where the student population is very, very diverse. The diversity is exciting! Boys and girls from all over the world are beginning their academic lives and growing together as they do it. Many of these families are not only new to our area but are also new to our country. It is wonderfully encouraging to me; as adult to see boys and girls of all different colors and many different languages getting along with each other and helping one another become the best kindergartner they can be. What a great picture of what our world should look like!
My Project
There are two main parts of this project. First the books! I love books and I want boys and girls to love books! In order to help fall in love with books and literature we need to have lots of them... we need to have factual books as well as those that are make believe. We need to have boy books and girl books; we need to have serious books and hilariously funny books! The group of books that I have chosen will help give our library depth, breadth and variety. Many of the boys and girls in my class have not always had access to books. My goal is to give them books they are interested in and that they can read themselves. The ONLY way to foster love for the written word is to have frequent and broad access to books. My hope is that our classroom library springboards the boys and girls into being lifelong lovers of literature.
The second component of my list are creative building and art supplies; the goal here is that these "hands-on" materials placed in our centers will come along side of the books the boys and girls are reading and help them connect to real life situations and opportunities.
For instance, if they are reading about a castle; I want them to build
one; if there is a monster in the story they sculpt or make one! Boys and girls need the opportunity to create and build all kinds of things! Sometimes they build something they have seen ....BUT sometimes they invent something entirely new! What a celebration there is in kindergarten when that happens! Here is where they learn to trust their own ideas and not be afraid to follow a dream...especially if it is a new idea!
