Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine you are five years old again: You arrive at school, ready for another day, but suddenly you are overcome by the urge to go to the bathroom. You raise your hand to tell your teacher, but come back a few minutes later needing help with your belt...only it isn't a belt, it's a plastic bag.

My students hail from a high-poverty neighborhood.

Although each family is different, several of my students' families are struggling financially. Due to this, basic necessities, such as clean uniforms and climate appropriate clothing, often get put on the back burner. One of my students in particular often comes to school tripping over her pants which are much too long for her tiny body, but have probably been saved with lots of care from an older sibling. This same student has come to school wearing a plastic bag in place of a belt, as well as shirts missing two or three buttons right above her belly. Several other students either have to wear the same clothing they accidentally stained earlier in the week or their parents must resort to sending them without a uniform. When students are out of uniform, they must wear one of the school's shirts, which are big kids' large and fit my little kinder students like dresses.

My Project

With the clothing I am requesting, I will be able to provide some of my students with much needed uniforms. They will no longer have to wear clothes that does not fit them or is falling apart simply because they cannot afford to do otherwise. Also, with winter approaching, my students will need accessories such as hats, gloves, and scarves to keep them warm during the bitter cold. These items are life essentials.

Although my students are not yet fully aware of their situation, I have witnessed the happiness and relief even used clothing can bring a child.

With these brand new clothing items and winter accessories, my students will be cozy when they go outside for recess or walk to and from school, but more importantly, it would take a bit of burden off their families while ensuring that my students are well-groomed every day.
