Keeping It Together: Chairs To Help Students With Autism
My students need specialized chairs and cushions to keep their bodies calm while sitting on the carpet. These chairs will help my students with autism stay focused during lessons.

My Students
Picture this: ten children sitting cross legged on the carpet for a math lesson. Next to them, two children are sprawled out with their legs and arms bumping into their classmates. The latter two students have difficulty keeping their bodies to themselves. These comfy chairs will help them a lot.
My children attend a Title I public school (where the majority of students come from low-income families) in New York.
My students are part of a special program that serves students with autism in a general education setting. The purpose of the program is for the students with autism to be surrounded by their general education peer models. Our students with autism have many sensory needs. They benefit from having movement breaks in the classroom to regulate their bodies. During lessons, they sometimes struggle to sustain attention due to the need for movement. This often causes students to sprawl their bodies out on the carpet, which in turn distracts their classmates as well as themselves. With the help from these chairs, our students will be able to keep a calm body during lessons. This will enable them to stay focused on the lesson and learn much more.
My Project
With your donation, all of my students will be able to learn in a very positive way. My students with autism will benefit from the chairs and the squishy seats because the chairs will keep our students' bodies calm during lessons. My students enjoy the feedback their bodies get from being hugged and the chairs will give them the "hug" they need to stay focused during lessons. The squishy seats will help our students move in a controlled way. Using the squishy seats with the chairs will enable my students to learn without distraction. I will teach my students how to be responsible for their chairs and squishy seats. This will connect with my school's overall focus of responsibility.
Your donation to this project will make a huge difference in the learning of my students with autism.
I witness their struggle every day as they attempt to keep their bodies controlled so that they can pay attention and learn during lessons. With the comfy chairs and squishy seats, my students will have the help they need to keep their bodies calm. This will immediately change their behavior and allow them the opportunity to learn alongside their general education peers.
