Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the pleasure of teaching high school students in a large, urban, high-need district. My students are a lively group of diverse, young people with an eagerness to learn and achieve great things.
Shakespeare is challenging for most people. However, most of my students have had little to no prior exposure to his work and often feel frustrated while trying to work through it. I believe some teachers steer away from incorporating this type of traditional study because the students are easily discouraged by it, but I feel that eliminating that part of the curriculum is doing a disservice to my students. I want them to leave my English classroom on a level playing field with students in the suburbs. Recently, one of my students said, "Why doesn't someone translate this into real English so maybe we could get it!" While I did explain the benefit of trudging through such a difficult task, I also started researching materials that might help act as a "life raft" for my students when we are studying Shakespeare's works. My students need this type of rigorous literature study if they are going to be prepared for college. Knowing that they have the skills they need and the exposure to classical literature will make them more successful college students. Unfortunately, while there are great resources available my school does not have the funding to purchase the texts we need.
Last year I was blessed by generous donors from this site, and I was able to get "No Fear Romeo and Juliet" and "No Fear Macbeth". I was amazed at the impact these materials had on my students' confidence. Most of the time we read and studied the original text, but my students knew the modern English translation was there to help them if they needed it. Many students said it helped them be more confident readers, and helped them when they got stuck on their homework. I am hoping I can recreate that same experience for my students with these next plays.
Your donation will put a timeless piece of literature and history into the hands of a student who has the drive to learn.
