Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is a new program to work on vocational skills. I teach 5 classes; Basic Skills Math, Real World Math, Personal Management/Science and Work Readiness. Students have an on campus café job, keep a daily check register, and practice purchases at our incentive store.

Our students have various disabilities that limit them from receiving a general education diploma.

This program is designed to allow students to learn life skills so they can be successful after finishing high school or go onto a transition program at age 22. My students are 9th-12th graders with a range of moderate and severe disabilities; Autism, specific learning disabilities, emotional and behavior disabilities, and vision and hearing impairments to name a few. Many come from difficult home lives and we are trying to encourage and support a pathway to success. Many have skills that are far below their grade level and feel insecure about school.

My Project

My students will use games and activities to help learn math and science skills. These resources will give opportunities for hands on practice with the way math and science are used in the real world. As the teacher, I can see what skills students have and where I can focus lessons for them. As the students, will be having fun while improving needed skills to help get a job and live as independently as possible. There are games like allowance and pay day where students will work on their money handling skills. The card games to work on remembering their multiplication and division facts. Many of my students have had to spend extra time on reading, writing and math skills and have missed out on science so I would like to incorporate this into my daily lessons with the scholastic magazines and other resources.

These students have been in classes where they have constantly worked on basic skills worksheets.

Many students with disabilities work well with hands-on lessons. I am hoping to bring in exciting ways for students to work on their skills in interesting ways, especially through games. They will hopefully be excited to come to school and stay engaged and start to feel they are learning material that is relevant to them. It will also help build their independence.
