Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 9th grade English at a high poverty, inner city school in New York. The vision of our school is for each student to attend college. For most of my students, they will be the first in their families to accomplish this dream.
One of the biggest challenges I face is developing a love of reading in my students. Many of my students are reading below grade level and some far below. Others think that reading is boring or just plain hate it.
These students face numerous challenges in their daily lives. They are surrounded by poverty. They experience or witness abuse, neglect, abandonment, teen pregnancy, gang violence, and drug abuse. Some are living in shelters or foster care.
These students need books that speak to them. Books that deal with the very real and frightening issues that they face and offer hope. One of the books on my list, A Child Called It, has been so loved that it is tattered and falling apart. Others are titles that my students have asked for or that I know they would love.
There is nothing like seeing the spark of excitement in a student's eye when they discover the joy of reading a book. Unfortunately, my classroom library has very few books that speak to the issues that they face. With an expanded list of books, my students can realize that reading can be a safe haven. They'll see that the first book they connected with was not a fluke but one of many books that can reach them.
If they become readers, they'll discover the joy of many different types of books, even ones that do not speak to their personal experiences. By becoming readers now, the impact on their lives will be huge. Studies have shown that students who read regularly have a larger vocabulary, read at higher levels, and develop better writing skills. With these added benefits, the goal of my students attending college is within their reach.
Please help foster a love of reading in my students. It is a gift that will benefit them for years to come.
