My Students

Tell me and I will forget. Show me and I will remember. Involve me and I will understand. Step back and I will act.-Chinese Proverb. Have you ever heard this quote? It describes our school day to a tee! Involving students with hands-on and relevant activities is imperative in today's world.

When you come into our classroom, you will see 16 bright and smiling faces, no matter what is going on around them.

My students are eager to please, enthusiastic about everything they do, and work hard to get from point A to point B. No matter what you put in front of them, my students diligently complete the task to its fullest extent. In our classroom, my students come from homes that are low socioeconomic homes. Their knowledge of current events is minimal. My goal is to be able to teach them about these current events and how they will impact their lives, even in 3rd grade, and beyond. My students enjoy learning about different social studies and science topics, so this project is something that will interest them beyond belief. Even though we attend a low-socioeconomic school and my students are not always well-off, you will never see them frown, and they will always handle each task handed to them with their heads held high and their eyes always lit up.

My Project

The core curriculum (ELA, Math, Science, and SS) requires a lot from students. Because of that, students need the opportunity to express themselves using various means of learning. One of those means of learning I think my students will benefit most from using a new source of literacy that incorporates real world events that are happening right now. In our classroom, we are constantly looking for ways to engage ourselves in our learning and ways to grow. Nothing motivates my students more than learning about events and ideas that are happening around them, some of which are happening in their own city! Through the use of these magazines, students can gain a wealth of knowledge and become well-rounded individuals, even at this young age. This is made possible because they can simply use their magazine to hold intellectual conversations and then research the events on their own. This way of learning brings about a new definition and sheds new light on the words of "today’s education."

This project will change my students' lives for the better and will improve my classroom teaching in a variety of ways.

Since we have access to thousands of fiction books, this avenue will open their eyes to non-fiction reading. My students will learn about the events that are changing their world as we speak, and will learn how to solve real-world challenges at the drop of a hat because they will have had that exposure to real-world issues and will know how to work towards changing them.
