My Students
Learning can sometimes get messy, but our school is not able to provide our classrooms with paper towels, tissues, or cleaning supplies. We'd like our classroom to be a clean, healthy, and welcoming environment.
I teach second grade in an urban school in New York.
Our student population is amazingly diverse: academically, ethnically, culturally, and economically. Watching young people from such differing backgrounds come together to create a cohesive and cooperative classroom community is always an inspiration to me.
My Project
When my students engage in hands-on activities, such as art or science projects, I'd like them to learn that cleaning up is an important part of the process. Paper towels, disinfecting wipes, dust mops and garbage bags will help them learn this important skill. My students frequently use individual-sized whiteboards during math and word study lessons, but I have never had enough erasers to go around. As a result, the students have had to use paper towels and tissues to erase their whiteboards, which has been costly and wasteful. Providing my students with a class set of whiteboard erasers will help them be tidier, and will teach them the benefits of reusable materials. We use large Ziploc bags in my classroom to store everything from books to math materials, which helps my students develop organizational skills. These are some of the many ways in which these supplies will be used in my classroom.
It is my goal to help instill in each of my students a sense of personal responsibility.
Learning to keep our classroom tidy, organized, and hygienic will be a positive step in this direction. Please help by supporting this project.
