This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 7th and 8th grade science in a Chicago middle school. Many of my students come from low-income families. Many of them have to deal with the gang violence that plagues their neighborhood every day.
Many of my students receive little, if any, science instruction before they come to our school. I want to give them as much information about science and health as I can before they go on to high school. Whenever I teach biology and health to my students, it amazes me how many misconceptions they have. Many of them get their information about their bodies and health from television and the Internet.
I would like to use a subscription to Current Health magazine in my room on a weekly basis. I believe that it is important for my students to get the facts about health issues that they have to deal with. This resource will not only provide a valuable reading resource for my students, it will also help me to address issues they face every day. It will also help me create an honest and open dialog in my classroom about health issues that students may not be comfortable discussing otherwise.
By providing this resource through your generous donation my students will receive enriched science instruction in my classroom. They will learn to correct many of the misconceptions they have about the health issues they face. They will get factual information which they will carry with them into high school and their future.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
