My Students

Our students are developing adolescents in the 7th through 12th grades. These students attend a specialized behavioral based school in Washoe County School District that helps them grow and develop in the social-emotional areas in addition to improving academic skills. They qualify for special education services under the eligibility categories of health impaired and/or severly emotionally disturbed.

Most of our students come from home situations affected by poverty, physical, sexual, emotional and drug abuse and neglect, yet they somehow are resilient and show a desire to be successful.

Many of the students who attend our program have great attendance and work diligently on their studies.

Some of our students have often been excluded from school due to Covid-19 protocol, many times without access to a dependable computer and wifi. Most of the students are in foster care or group homes. The result is that they have fallen behind in their classes.

Our school has very limited funds due to continuing budgeting issues within the district, yet, has worked diligently to provide a good educational experience.

My Project

By having a small laptop charging cart for the classroom, our students can demonstrate their individual responsibility to an increased level by having an organized charging space for each laptop. No longer will they wonder if their laptop will be available, sanitary, or in need of a charge. They can enter the classroom and immediately gather their laptop and begin their assignment. As students learn lifelong skills of order, responsibility and efficiency, they should be able to transfer them to other school settings or work environments. These laptops are essential for the individualized reading program they are using which is website based. We may also check out computers for distance learning on a as need basis.

Since many of our students read multiple grades below their grade level, it is essential that we provide the means for them to be successful in their program.

Quality earphones are also needed for much of the instruction is orally presented and those make listening and learning more effective. In the days of Covid 19 it is important to be able to sanitize items that the students so personally have contact with.
