My Project
Have you ever tried to rearrange a group of 25 or more teenagers in a smooth, orderly and quiet manner? It's a contradiction of terms.
Our students come from every corner of the world, seeking a new life of opportunity and freedom here in the United States.
They come with the hope that education will allow them to meet their full potential.
To keep them engaged, I use many different activities and learning set-ups during the class period. This requires that the chairs and desks be rearranged constantly. I have found that if the chair and desk legs are outfitted with tennis balls, they can be moved across the room with ease and quiet.
Since the room arrangement is often changed to fit the activities of the day, the ability to accomplish the move quickly and quietly allows for a smooth transition from one activity to the next activity.
My Project
My students need tennis balls to quiet the classroom noise. As you can imagine, tennis balls are not usually included in the list of essential school/classroom supplies.
And with the drastic cuts to school budgets, it is not likely to ever be funded by the school.
Every semester, I need to change the balls as they are worn out, and pick up much dust and dirt. To supply my classroom, I usually recycle tennis balls (the extra duty work best and last longest) from a nearby tennis court, however, they are not always available. I've exhausted my supply, and once again find myself in need of tennis balls to quiet down my room.
