Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our middle school community is diverse in just about every way you can imagine. Students of different races, religions, cultures, socio-economic backgrounds, gender-identities, sexualities, and learning styles all coexist and learn together in a happy and upbeat environment.
Teachers here are diverse too.
We are all so very different from one another, but all unified in our passion for teaching. We love what we do and we go the extra mile. Attending professional development is part of our staff culture. I was fortunate to have my school fund my attendance at the annual meeting and exposition of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) last year. I learned so much and was so inspired by the ideas I brought back to my classroom and my school community. I'd like the opportunity to attend this year's Centennial event in Chicago.
As the Math Department Facilitator at my school, what I learn will be shared with the entire math department as well as other staff. Last year my focus was on equity in math classrooms. This year I'd like to focus on culturally responsive curriculum and practices.
My Project
Contrary to what a lot of my non-teacher friends think, my math class never looks the same from one year to the next. I've been teaching math for 18 years and I'm constantly adding new strategies, modifying projects and learning activities, and improving my practice and curriculum.
To ensure that my students are getting the best possible math instruction, I have to keep up to date with the latest developments in teaching practice and pedagogy.
I read blogs and books. I follow prominent math educators on Twitter. I pore over websites and professional publications and attend local workshops. I'm dedicated to making myself the best math teacher I can be and I know that it takes constant work to do so.
Attending the NCTM conference has helped me improve my pedagogy and practice in the past. I'd like the opportunity to meet with and learn from some of the best math teachers in the country and bring some of their wisdom and experience back to my classroom and school community.
