it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
To say that our students have had to overcome a lot over this past year is an understatement. Not only have they had to deal with normal societal and economic pressures, but they've had to do so during a worldwide pandemic. Since returning to school, they are stronger, resilient, and more ready to take on the world!
Our school is a Title I urban school with the most diverse population in our district.
Over 66% of our students qualify to receive free or reduced-price lunches. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and bring a large array of experiences to our classrooms and school. School becomes a safe haven for these scholars - where expectations are the same every day and basic needs are met. While they come to school to learn, they thrive when they are given the opportunity to utilize a variety of resources to make learning real and fun.
My Project
Parents, teachers, and other caregivers spend quite a bit of time and energy helping kids learn basic hygiene when they are very young: how to wash hands and for how long, brushing teeth, coughing or sneezing into the elbow, and so on. This kind of teaching and coaching is a lot less common, though no less important, for older youth, especially as their bodies begin to change.
As children become more independent and begin taking care of their own hygiene, it is important for them to have access to the products they need including deodorant, toothbrushes, and lotion.
By providing this in the classroom, students are able to take what they need to keep themselves feeling confident throughout the day.
As children enter puberty is important to have items on hand at home as well as at school so we can prepare them to deal with their ever-changing bodies.
