Keeping Chemistry Real

My Students

For students to learn chemistry they have to have consumable materials available to them and they have to SEE some of the classic reactions that leave a lasting impression in their minds. They have to be WOWED! They have to have the opportunity to manipulate the materials themselves as well.

Many of my chemistry students are "average" students that are taking the course because they think it will look good on their college transcripts, but they don't want to have to work too hard.

My goal is to make them want to work harder, do better, and learn more that they may have thought possible. I find that these average students often learn material that they come to find out was being covered in the "advanced" classes of Chemistry - they just didn't realize when they signed up that they would learn so much.

My Project

These resources will allow students to see demonstration reactions as well as provide them with opportunities for student led lab activities. Under the current budgetary environment, I am running out of everything for both demonstration as well as student led experiments. I need to replenish supplies if I am going to be able to maintain a lab program for students and not merely turn the course into "virtual" chemistry.

Having a laboratory experience is what will help these students consider careers in chemistry and the sciences in general.

They love "doing" things in the classroom and "seeing" impressive reactions. I want to provide them with that opportunity. Thank you!
