it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our school is in a lower income rural community. I teach in a self-contained Exceptional Student Education classroom to students with language difficulties and various exceptionalities in Kindergarten through 5th grade. My students typically remain in my classroom for multiple school years. While all children are special in their own way, these kiddos are truly inspiring! I feel blessed to be able to witness them light up as they learn about themselves and the world around them.
I want to teach my students to understand themselves, have compassion for others, and to see the world through the eyes of those around them.
My students (ages 5-12) work on social emotional and independent functioning skills as part of our curriculum, and are each working on their own individual goals. They struggle with identifying their emotions and understanding how their choices affect others. We discuss emotions and feelings as a class and in small groups. However, there are times when a student becomes upset and requires additional assistance to identify the emotion they are feeling or how their actions make their friends feel. I would like to create a calming space in my classroom to assist the student in calming down and understanding their actions and emotions. A Little Spot of Feelings: Emotion Detective includes a book, 8 mini stuffed toys that represent each emotion, a poster detailing 55 different emotions, and a mirror. We will use the poster and mirror to identify the emotion in their own face and explore the emotion on friend’s faces. Many of our kiddos have difficulty expressing themselves with words. I will measure their understanding of compassion when they point to the positive emotion they would like their friend to have and will guide them to make the correct positive behavior choices.
