This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
If I can't bring them to the world's great museums, at least I can bring the museums to them - in books. To have an art library for them to learn would be such a wonderful thing.
My students, while being talented and intelligent, do not often get to see things beyond their neighborhoods in the South Bronx.
Our school is lucky to have a small arts program. Although, we are underfunded and unable to do many of the exciting arts projects that our students are so good at.
My Project
The books that I am requesting would provide an invaluable experience for my students to see and know artwork and artist from around the world and throughout history. Most of my students have never been to a museum, let alone experience the most inspired artwork that museums can offer. Reading these books will allow my students to 'visit' the artwork while they improve their literacy. These books would be such a valuable asset to my curriculum and my students would cherish them. I cannot wait to offer my students an art library of their own.
We all know that schools are underfunded.
The first place that money is cut is in the arts programs. In a time when even academic books are out of budget, art books are an even smaller priority. Books about art can be so engaging for students because they can read about what they see. Without these books, it is that much more difficult to show them the art world and inspire them to be a part of it.
