My Project
The materials chosen were selected carefully considering my students' needs and the resources available to them. The students I teach range from kindergarten to second graders who are on the autism spectrum. Students who are on the spectrum have a unique way of learning. It is my job to figure out his or her talents and build upon them inside and outside the classroom. The materials I have chosen, such as the sensory objects, new rug, and emotion books are all resources we currently do not have access to. These will help me to create a comfortable and safe learning space for my students.
Each student in my classroom has his or her own special skills.
Sometimes, noises and things in our setting can disrupt the learning. The therapy toys such the calming strips, play-doh, and sensory disks will help to ease my students' discomfort when situations arise during the school day. Not only will my students greatly benefit from sensory items, but they will learn how to identify emotions and ways to cope with them. The feelings and emotions play mats and Little Spot of Emotions books will help my students understand when and why they could be feeling certain ways. After identifying the emotions, students will replace a negative response with a positive one. For example, students will use the calm down area with the sensory items instead of eloping (run or wander away from caregivers or secure locations).
I'm so excited to start this journey with my K-2 Autistic Support classroom! We would greatly appreciate these items!
