This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a public school in Elmhurst, Queens that serves a low-income population of over 1700 students; all students qualify for free lunch. We are located in the epicenter of COVID-19, and as many of their families have been hit hard by this virus, they still remain strong and resilient. I love being a part of this community that would help and support each other no matter what.

My upcoming 5th graders are sweet, determined and bright learners; I want to support them in the classroom by giving them the materials they need in order to succeed.

Many families have been going through financial hardships at this time, and because of that, we are not asking any students to bring in materials from home when the school year starts again.

NYC has faced major budget cuts this year, including hiring freezes, and cuts across many programs. Just this past week, teachers received news that our teachers choice money will be cut, which is a $250 stipend we receive every year to purchase materials for the classroom. $250 is just a small fraction of money that teachers pour into their classrooms everyday, but make a huge impact in the classroom.

My Project

NYC has a plan for reopening this September and since my school is operating at a 135% utilization rate, opening safely is our main priority. When we go back to school, we will be interacting with our students. When they go home, they will be interacting with their parents and when their parents go to work, they will be interacting with many other people on the subway, at work and so forth. I want to limit the potential spread of COVID as much as possible by providing my students with personal supplies. We are keeping it CDC!

With students coming back with financial hardships, emotional trauma from the loss of family members, and more, I want to make their school life easier by providing some supplies for them.

The goal of having these materials is to help support their learning despite their current financial situation. I want to have their pencils all sharped and organized into their own pencil cases by the time they step into my classroom! If we follow a blended learning model, these supplies will allow them to complete their daily learning activities in class without needing to share since everyone will be 6 feet apart. When they are learning on line, they will still have tactile tools to help them complete tasks without always depending on the computer, such as computing math problems with a dry erase board.

I am requesting for basic supplies such as pencils, pencil cases, erasers, mini sharpeners, scissors, and post-its. I am also requesting lamination sheets so I can make personal white boards for every student along with a white board marker. I will be cutting up microfiber towels so they can use that as a white board eraser.
