Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a co-teacher in a English language learner first grade classroom! We work hard to develop phonics, reading, and writing skills for the majority of the school day. We need an air conditioner to keep our kids comfortable and focused on learning. We also need a dramatic play kitchen set to provide students an opportunity to play and use their imagination.
My students are from all over the world - Vietnam, China, Cambodia, Burma, Malaysia, Mexico, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Pakistan, and Nepal.
They are refugees and immigrants who are learning English and love to come to school! However, their life experiences have limited their exposure to play and creative expression. They need opportunities to use their speaking and language in an informal setting to express themselves. These foundational skills allow students to problem solve and explore their creativity. Building social and expressive language is fundamental to improving reading and writing skills. Right now, the room is unbelievably hot and it is very hard to concentrate and learn.
My Project
Unfortunately, our classroom does not have an air conditioner and the beginning and end of the year are very challenging for the kids. An air conditioner will create a comfortable environment for our students and the children will be able to focus on learning instead of the stifling heat.
My students love to pretend!
The kitchen play set and dolls will be used in our dramatic play center. It will be essential to building an environment where our English language learners can communicate, develop their language skills and use their imagination. This type of interactive play and discourse is fundamental to a child's academic and social development.
