Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project is for supplies for my WIN period. (WIN is What I Need and it is enrichment, extension, SEL, &remediation.) This project provides students with a unique opportunity to show their school pride and their pride in their creative achievements with a trucker hat. They are very fashionable and "in" right now and my middle school students in my WIN will get to create their own school spirit trucker hat. I also run Girl Scouts at my school & they will also participate in this activity.

Besides the kinship we build while doing this very unique craft activity, they will build a sense of school and community pride while not only making them but when wearing them.

The sense of community and school family would shine through and be evident as they walk out of the room; each wearing their hat, representing our class and school community. Be it creative or interpersonal; finding that outlet, taking care of yourself, and making connections are so important to everyone. I believe you learn by doing, and making memorable experiences makes learning fun. When kids are having fun, they want to learn more. When kids feel connected, it creates a fun and safe space to be and to learn. It makes a wonderful perpetual cycle of lifelong learners.

As a teacher in a low-income school district, I want to provide all I can for my students to have the most memorable educational experience. We have over 1000 students in our school. Over 80% of them are receiving free or reduced-price lunches daily. Over half of the student body is Latino, and we have an extremely large English as a Second Language (ESL) population. Over 30% of my students have recently exited the ESL program. Over 15% of my students are classified as special needs.
