Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher in the South Bronx, a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges including school closure due to the coronavirus. My students are are comprised of Special Education, ESL, and low performing inner city kids. Many of our families live well below the poverty line with few resources in their house and technology access is a struggle for our families.
Running a classroom digitally is hard work!
There are many online platforms for students to read. However, because of the lack of internet, and some of my students are in shelters, reading a book has become a challenge.
I'm afraid of these long-lasting effects on their reading. We've worked so hard this school year building our reading skills. Getting actual books in my kids hands would be a life saver!

We've worked so hard this school building our reading skills- I don't want my students to fall behind because of where they are.
Having an actual book that is engaging in their hand will keep the love of reading alive. I can’t replicate what happens in the classroom but having a shared text can help stimulate and engage my students and keep the thread of independent reading going.
