Diversity. If I could sum up my students in one word, it would be diverse. I have students of various religions, various socio-economic backgrounds and coming to our high school from many different middle schools.
What they all have in common though is the desire to learn.
Their parents want the best for them and have chosen our school based on its academic rigor, great reputation, and variety of extracurricular clubs (over 100) from cultural to special interests to sports. My classes include the on-level students as well as those who want to challenge themselves in a rigorous college-prep course structured to advance their math skills to put them on the path to AP Calculus or AP Statistics.
My Project
Research has shown that students learn math very effectively through the use of "vnps" -- vertical non-permanent surfaces.
Covering much of the walls of a classroom with whiteboards helps students stand, be more active, and work collaboratively on math problems and projects.
Teachers can quickly scan the room to see what groups may need more direction or help at any given time. Reluctant students respond well to the erasable nature and teamwork is facilitated easier. Communication about the mathematics naturally increases in this environment as well. Please help increase the amount of whiteboard space in my classroom and support my wonderful students' learning!
