Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are classified as special education students. They are classified with different disabilities, most prominent speech, learning disabled and language difficulty. Many of the students who attend the school live in homeless shelters. More than three-quarter of my students are from low-income households and these students qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch. The school also provides uniforms, food, and various other supplies to the students who are housed in homeless shelters. My school is made up of 47% English Language Learners.
My students are low-level readers but have a great passion for books, a passion for learning, and they try really hard despite their disability.
The students in my class come from all cultures, such as Ghana, Puerto Rico, and America. My students smile every day and are eager to learn new things. They like to use their fine motor skills to create and construct things.
Despite my students' disabilities, I push them hard to come close to grade level in the content area. I always tell my students a disability is a condition, it doesn't define who you are. So, with that being said, I have high expectations for my students.
My Project
The importance of having these read-alongs is to help my students to keep understanding that printed language represents the spoken word.
Audiobooks can help my students by introducing them to books above their reading level.
The audiobooks can model good reading, teach critical listening skills, highlight the humor in books, introduce my students to new genres, and introduce them to new vocabulary.
Also, the audiobooks could allow my students to have a conversation around the book, promoting reading with accountable talk. All these strategies mention will help my students with their reading comprehension and continue to promote the love for reading.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
