My Students

Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself. -John Dewey. Scholastic magazines help bring more current, relevant, real life problems into our math and reading studies.

My students are diverse.

They have a wide variety of interests. My students are an eclectic bunch of sixth graders that never cease to amaze me. They are an opinionated group that must be engaged by material that speaks to them. Many of my students come to me with a strong distaste for reading or math (or both). It is critical that I interest them enough to taste success in these areas!

My Project

I have used the scope magazine in my classroom for the past two years with great success. Students are highly engaged by many informational articles written for their age group. Many of the articles incite debate around current issues. This is a way to increase interest in students. The magazines also come with access to printable resources for students to interact with their reading and learn the skills essential to our common core standards. The math magazines provide articles and questions based on real world mathematical data. I believe that these will help students think critically in order to solve complex problems.

These magazines will provide structured access to common core aligned activities.

They will help me to bridge our aging textbooks to the time in which we live. The large range of targeted lessons will help me to reach small groups of students who are struggling, as well as provide challenges for students who are advanced. These magazines will help my students reach very challenging math and reading goals.
