This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? A review of student grades and school-wide data indicates that students with disabilities are the lowest-performing sub-group at our inner-city, low-income elementary school.
My classroom serves students with a range of disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit disorder, specific learning disabilities, and emotional disturbance.
They come to my classroom excited and ready to learn, but often they have trauma, anxiety, and tension in their lives that makes coming to school difficult. The typical student in my class reads at a first-grade level, and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense but I love the way they keep trying to be successful. One hundred percent of our students are African American or Latino and benefit from free lunch. The opportunity gap and achievement gap are apparent among our student population and the student populations of more affluent areas of our school district.
My Project
My students are now back in the classroom after 18 months of Distance Learning. One of their areas of need is writing, which is something we work on during every session in my RSP classroom.
Sometimes it's the little things that make the biggest difference.
For my classroom, it's the basic supplies. We need a pencil sharpener to keep our pencils sharp, we need tracing boards to help our students write their letters, words, and sentences. We are also in need of colored and black markers to practice our sight words and phonemic instruction, and publish during our Writer's Workshop. We're also in need of a laminator so the students can keep their projects safe. My students also love prizes and they can't get enough Fidget Poppers! Not only are they fun, but they help with my students' sensory needs.
