Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are creative and curious. A majority of our students are Native American or Hispanic. They share their languages and cultures with others in the school. Nearly all of our students come from a lower socioeconomic background. They come to school with diverse perspectives. Our students display high levels of perseverance and resilience. They use their perspectives and skills when asked to complete problem-solving activities.

Through problem-based learning, they are connecting what they discover at school to the world around them.

They present their ideas for projects and grant proposals to others in our school and the broader community. Our students are working toward breaking the cycle of poverty in their families and our community. They are full of potential and have so much to share.

My Project

Our families have been assisting us as co-teachers while we teach and connect with students through distance learning using the free version of Seesaw.

Due to the educational gaps that already existed for our students before COVID-19 closed our brick and mortar schools, we are looking at continuing learning opportunities throughout the summer.

We will be moving from a modified calendar to a traditional calendar due to the uncertainty of the beginning of the new school year. This change means students will miss another four weeks of learning. Distance learning is our only means of reaching our students right now.

The Seesaw platform has allowed students to share videos of hands-on projects, audio as they explain how to solve math problems or read a story, and use their creativity to draw responses to questions. It has also provided their families with a more accessible format to use to assist their children and stay in contact with teachers. Seeing the students smile as they share their learning and hearing their voices has been the highlight of our days.

Some of our students have been struggling to find devices and WiFi to stay connected to learning opportunities. With the assistance of our local Boys and Girls Club, our students will have access to needed technology during the summer to catch up for lost learning time. Having the school version of Seesaw will allow our teachers to better track students' progress and share their work with next year's teachers. We will be teaching our summer STEM camp and other activities through distance learning.

Please help us keep online learning and communication going throughout the summer and into the 2020-2021 school year, no matter how it may start.
