Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Teaching at an alternative school means that the student population at my school is incredibly diverse both racially and socioeconomically. Students with different diets and varied living situations enroll throughout the school year with our rolling admission and graduation policies. To describe one student would be to describe one student, because they all come from different backgrounds and experiences. Some of our high schoolers are as old as 20 years and must support themselves and others in their families.
Students at our school alternate between taking classes in one location and internships in another.
They have stressful schedules, many have after-school or weekend jobs, some are supporting their own small children, and several struggle with housing and food security. Too many students skip breakfast and other meals throughout the week, which means teachers in my school regularly spend money out of their own pockets buying food to keep our students awake or simply in class until the end of the day.
Our high school, although improving, struggles to have high attendance rates, because many of our students arrive late or leave early to seek food or to work at paying jobs so they can afford dinner. Providing healthier snacks during the day than they might otherwise choose on their own means keeping students engaged with learning, stressing less about how to pay for their next meal, and awake enough to focus while there.
