My Students

In the heart of New Jersey, our school has a diverse student population that draws from five feeder districts. Our students’ interests vary greatly due to variations within our environment. Popular hobbies include hunting and fishing and range from surfing and skating. There is a small indie music scene, as well as many popular cover bands that play up and down the shore area.

We have a wonderfully eclectic mix of students, from many diverse backgrounds.

What unites them all is their passion for learning music, approaching the subject from a youthful exuberance. My job is simple: to cultivate their motivation for learning.

My Project

I incorporate a modern recording studio into my classroom environment. I have dozens of instruments (many of them thanks to the good folks at DonorsChoose.org), which include electric guitar and basses, keyboards, and electric drumsets. All of these instruments and instrument stations require headphones.

Having headphones and silent practice stations is imperative to achieving student success in my classroom.

Students must be able to hear themselves in an isolated listening space. The headphones work two ways though, as it keeps the students' practice sessions quiet to the rest of the class. They don't bother anyone else, and nobody bothers them. Ultimately student productivity and teacher sanity is maximized!
